Now approaching its 10th year, Essex Street Academy (ESA) is not your ordinary New York City public high school. ESA’s emphasis on academic achievement, and the emotional support students need, gives graduates from ESA the best chance of being successful at the college of their choice. ESA’s success can be attributed to the school’s talented and dedicated faculty, commitment to small class sizes, successful college advising program, and enrichment provided to students both after school and on Saturdays. The school has secured an 85% graduation rate and a 98% college acceptance rate. 70% of ESA's students go on to pursue bachelor's degrees and 30% pursue associates degrees. All of these numbers are well above the city and national averages, particularly for at-risk populations. ESA is part of the New York Performance Standards Consortium. Formed in 1997, the Consortium is a coalition of high schools throughout New York State who have developed an assessment system that is an alternative to high stakes testing and leads to innovative teaching and quality learning. As a result, Consortium schools are at the forefront of educational reform.
